Awards Tea May 2008 and 6 Very Excited Girls !
Our Scholarship Fund continues to thrive and give generously to the heavily-screened and well-deserving girls from all corners of Contra Costa County. For 2008, due to generous sponsors and a most successful golfing fundraiser in April, the Fund was able to offer $10,000 each to 6 great girls!
“Financially this has been a good year for us, allowing us to be more generous with the scholarships,” said Carol Lee Bishop, the dynamic newly-retired president of the BHSFund. Carol Lee founded the fund seven years ago and built it from scratch with the help of many of the ladies from Blackhawk Women’s Club. This fund selects girls from within the Contra Costa County educational system and benefits female students of little monetary means, all academic achievers with GPA’s of 3.5 or higher, and who actively volunteer in their communities.
A few weeks ago, Carol Lee and the Scholarship committee presented the fabulous awards during an elegant annual Awards Tea at the home of Vice- Chair Sandy Cosgrove. Distributing the checks there made them even more special!
“In fact, there were dropped jaws and tears from both students and parents when I announced each of the six recipients would be getting $10,000!” Carol Lee continued. “We feel that by eliminating some of the financial anxieties involved with the high cost of education, these bright ladies will be more focused on their studies, enjoy the academic experience and ultimately perform better.”
All six recipients are headed to University of California colleges in the fall and include Alexis Angelelo, Bionca Htun, Alexis Krup, Sophia Liem, Minh Nguyen and Hannah Yemane. “Carol Lee and her team are amazing for helping brighten the future of this nation,” said recipient Bionca Htun. “Their support has inspired me to do the same when I get the chance.”
In addition to recognizing the potential of these “super stars”, as Carol Lee fondly refers to them, she introduced the team of remarkable can-do women who will continue her legacy into the future. They include:

Carol Lee’s goal is to accomplish just what Bionca said: To inspire the girls to make a difference in someone else’s life when they have the chance. “When we started the Blackhawk Women’s Scholarship Fund there was something I read that expressed how we felt about helping young women strive to better their circumstances.” It was:
THERE IS A DESTINY THAT MAKES US SISTERS.
NO WOMAN GOES HER WAY ALONE.

What a grand time Blackhawk had hosting the LPGA ladies in a wonderful event for the second year in a row. The weather was cool, sometimes a bit breezy for the golfers with cold mornings giving away to warm sunshine in the afternoons. Perfect golf weather. By the look of it, the attendance was once again swelling the grounds of beautiful Blackhawk. Blackhawk rocked, never mind the ladies of the LPGA.
Most of the BWSF Board were engaged in volunteering their time and efforts to make this community prepared for the onslaught of Longs Challenge. Some staffed the hospitality tent, some were evident at the fun Pairings Party at the Blackhawk Museum. Some members chauffeured the ladies around, were helping with player housing, housed some pros, were on the course walking and doing various and sundry jobs. It was work and it was fun. It was sweet!
The LPGA Longs Drugs Stores once again awarded us a $5000 grant from Longs Drug Stores for community service helping young women with scholarships for the colleges and universities of their choice.
Carol Lee Bishop, President and Founder of the BWSF had the distinct privilege of meeting the President, CEO and Chairman Warren Bryant at the Pairings Party and thanked him for the wonderful check. He told her they set aside a chunk of money for charitable giving and certainly we were one that deserved it. Mr. Bryant thanked us.
Pacific Rim Recycling gave a big LPGA Fundraising party for four charitable giving groups and we were selected as one of them. Pacific Rim matched the ticket price of every ticket sold to this event. The event was sold out with about 220 people in attendance. It helps a lot that CEO Steve Moore's wife, Julie Moore is our treasurer and has been since our inception six years ago. It was a fabulous day of light refreshments, Mirassou wines being poured at the bar, margaritas, beer and non alcoholic beverages were self served while watching the LPGA pros out the back door of the Moore's beautiful home. At 4:30 Papa's Garage Blues and Rock band played live for us while El Balazo offered a fantastic buffet dinner selection of tasty Mexican food at 6:30. Deserts were brought home made by the board of the BWSF, Sharon Wechsler, Vice President of Masterpiece Cookies, donated a very generous amount of yummy cookies. We thank them all.
DJ Music took aver and spun tunes until the last revelers went home. What a fantastic party. The Blackhawk Women's Scholarship Fund was awarded $8,000 for their efforts. We heartily thank the Moore family for their very generous donation of time, effort and a pretty nice check.
Once again, we look favorably upon donating our time and efforts next Fall when the ladies from the LPGA swoop back into Blackhawk and show us another good time. It could not get any better with the double sudden death playoff on Sunday.
It is with generous donations like those mentioned above that reinforce our very beings, we are doing a good job in giving a younger woman a hand-up, and can depend upon our neighbors to help us help them.
Swinging for Scholars
April 26, 2008
Benefiting 3.5 grade-point average, in-need, college-bound women throughout Contra Costa County.
A fabulous event occured this past February! The Scholarship Fund joined forces with 4 other well-deserving charities in the East Bay: Matteucci Foundation for Youth Nonviolence, Hospice Foundation, Fred Finch Youth Center and Pacific Chamber Symphony to produce a beautiful evening that we all won’t soon forget!
It had to be one of the “most memorable of 2008”!
With great pleasure we welcomed over 150 guests to the EAST BAYCHARITY BALL… VALENTINI: A MOMENT IN TIME! This 1930’s and 40’s period black-tie extravaganza featured a cocktail hour, a light supper which included sumptuous prime rib slices, marinated shrimp, exotic cheese platters, and the return of our aptly-named signature “Valentini” martini, created and donated by Hangar One Vodka of Alameda! There was dancing to the popular Martini Brothers Band and entertainment by the nimble Deco Belles dancers! Featured was “The Vault”, showing jewelry from Gent Jay Diamond Jewelry Wholesalers!
Close to Valentine’s Day, our aptly-named “Valentini”martini got us all in the party mood! Red in color and divine in taste!
The setting of the Rotunda Building was most elegant (you may visit their website if you wish to view this outstanding venue www.rotundabuildingoakland.com), and along with the volumes of long-stemmed cream calle lilies and flickering candle-light, the mood of the evening was one of fantasy and fairy tales! Attendees donned long gowns, some sequined, some satin, or period dresses of the Flapper era. Gentlemen sported top hats, fedoras or bowlers! It was all quite a sight!
All in all the evening was festive and lovely…. and for a good cause, raising thousands of dollars for the 5 charities involved! Thank you to all those who supported us in this endeavor!
