2023 BSF Scholarship Recipients (Left to Right - Shira Weiss-Ishai, Sheila McKinney, Patricia Britton, Lizeth De La Cruz)
Patricia Britton
Patricia is a graduate of Pittsburg High School and is attending UC Berkeley. During high school, she not only worked and played JV tennis, but was also very involved with community service. Patricia volunteered at ENGin tutoring Ukrainian students in English and advocated for the awareness of the dangers of drugs by making presentations to students and creating a video for the Pittsburg City Council on the Alcohol, Marijuana, and Prescription Drug Coalition.
Lizeth De La Cruz
Lizeth graduated from Concord High School and is attending St. Mary’s College. She founded a jewelry business and worked at other jobs while attending high school. At Concord High School, she was the rally commissioner and President of a number of clubs including the Fashion Club, Women United and Nirvana. She was also a student athlete playing Lacrosse and Volleyball and competed in Stunt and Cheer.
Sheila McKinney
After attending Pinole Valley High School, Sheila is now attending Howard University. She was the Co-President of the Speech and Debate team where she won many awards for poetry. At Pinole, Sheila also was the African American Student Union President and Vice President of the Anti-Racism Club. Sheila worked during high school and also founded the Black Girl Joy Club, tutored and planned events at a daycare and participated in Upward Bound.
Shira Weiss-Ishai
Shira is a Monte Vista High School graduate who is now attending Columbia. In high school, she was an AP Scholar with Honors who was not only a volunteer preschool teacher but tutored on a daily basis. Shira also volunteered at a children’s COVID Vaccine clinic, was an event planner for BBYO and was active with the Contra Costa Midrasha. She also competed on a club soccer team and the Rudgear Meadows Swim team for over 10 years.
